What is BOTOX?
BOTOX Cosmetic is FDA-approved to temporarily make moderate to severe frown lines, crow's feet and forehead lines look better in adults.
Who is a candidate for BOTOX®?
Anyone who has visible wrinkles they wish to diminish is a candidate for BOTOX®. BOTOX® is also used to stop grinding teeth and eliminate TMJ, stop excessive sweating on the face, palms, underarms, or soles of feet, treat cervical dystonia, blepharospasms, and misaligned eyes, and soothe chronic migraines and overactive bladders. You should not undergo treatment if you have a neuromuscular disease, an active infection at the injection site, or are currently pregnant or breast feeding.
How does it work?
BOTOX® Cosmetic targets one of the underlying causes of frown lines and crow’s feet—the repeated muscle contractions from frowning and squinting over the years. Your specialist will inject these muscles with BOTOX®Cosmetic to temporarily reduce muscle activity. You will begin to notice a visible smoothing of your crow’s feet lines and frown lines between your brows.
Is it safe?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is one of the most extensively studied medical aesthetic treatments and is approved for cosmetic use in 78 countries. BOTOX®Cosmetic has a record of experience that aesthetic specialists know and trust. And, the safety and efficacy of BOTOX® Cosmetic have been evaluated in both Allergan sponsored clinical trials as well as in 417 peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals. As far as side effects go, three percent of patients experienced eyelid drooping in the frown lines studies and 1% of patients experienced eyelid swelling in the crow's feet studies. Other possible side effects include dry mouth, discomfort or pain at the injection site, tiredness, headache, neck pain, eye and vision problems, and allergic reactions. The side effects listed are extremely uncommon in our practice, and none of them are long-term or permanent.
Is it painful?
Most patients report that being injected with BOTOX® Cosmetic feels like a pinch. Your provider will use a topical cream to numb the area prior to treatment. You will be provided with ice packs after your procedure to take home with you as well. We take all of these precautions to ensure maximum comfort, but BOTOX® is virtually a painless procedure when it is performed by a trained and certified provider.
How long does BOTOX® take?
The topical numbing cream takes 5 to 10 minutes to work, and the injections themselves will take only 5-10 minutes depending on where they are administered and how many are required. You may want to spend a few minutes after your appointment icing any injection sites that are particularly sore. You are also free to use your treatment room mirrors to apply any makeup to the area after your treatment as long as you touch the injected area very lightly when applying makeup.
How long do results last?
BOTOX® usually lasts 3 to 12 months depending on what you are using it to treat. Some patients who get regular BOTOX® notice that they will start to need less Botox and that it lasts longer. Once BOTOX® wears off, your face will look the same as it did prior to treatment.
What areas of the body can be treated with BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is safe for almost any area of the body and is dependent on whether you are using it in a cosmetic or therapeutic manner.BOTOX® is usedprimarily for cosmetic purposes to the face and neck, but it is also used for therapeutic purposes (eliminating migraines, stopping excessive sweating, etc.) in areas such as the jaw, head, hands, armpits, feet, etc. Please ask us about any area you think could benefit from the use of BOTOX® injections if you do not see it listed above.
What do I need to do to prepare for BOTOX® treatment?
You do not need to do anything in particular to prepare for BOTOX®. If you’d like you can remove any makeup prior to your treatment so that your provider can see the area to be treated better, or we can do this for you during your appointment. If you exercise daily, make sure you get your workout in before coming into the office since we advise taking the rest of the day off from exercise after you receive your injections.
How much does BOTOX® cost?
The cost of BOTOX® depends on the number of units required. Larger or multiple areas, or deeper wrinkles will take more units than small areas with fine or minimal wrinkles. Please call or email us with your individual inquiry and we can provide you with a quote. Please don't forget to ask about any promotions we are running. If you consent to participate in our “model release" we may offer additional discounts on your treatment or package!
What is the recovery from BOTOX® like?
We recommend that you make an effort to move the injected muscles for the next hour more than usual to help more of the BOTOX® to get into the right muscles faster. You should not rub the injected area. If you received injection to your face, you can lie down on your backor keep your face upright, but you want to avoid looking or facing downward as much as possible. We recommend that you take the rest of the day off from exercising. You can resume all normal facial positions and activities the following day, or at least 4 hours after your injections.
What should I expect at my appointment?
Your provider will consult with you, examine your problem area(s), and determine if there is any contraindication to BOTOX® injections. You will have numbing cream applied to the area that will be injected for 5 to 10 minutes, and then your provider will administer several quick and virtually painless injections. The procedure takes only a few minutes total. You will be given ice packs to take with you.
When will I see aresults?
BOTOX® takes about a week at most to reach maximum effectiveness. Most people start to see a change in appearance in 3-4 days after the procedure.
