What is AFT?

AFT stands for Advanced Fluorescent Technology. AFT Laser is the next generation of IPL laser treatment technology. This technology improves texture, tone, appearance and age spot removal of the skin with minimal downtime.

Is it Safe?

AFT is both safe and effective. Your provider will be able to determine proper settings for your skin type and tone. AFT usually has zero side effects or downtime and is virtually painless. The only precaution issued to patients is requiring that they stay out of the sun or tanning beds for 24 hours after their procedure. Patients must use a minimum of SPF 30 in the following weeks when the skin is more susceptible to sun damage than usual.

How Does it Work?

AFT uses low energy light to gently heat and reduce skin imperfections. This unique “Equal Distribution” technique, varies from a traditional IPL treatment. Most lasers only produce a single wavelength of light and limits on what they can effectively treat. AFT, however, emits a particular type of light, transmitting energy pulses over many wavelengths. This allows the light to penetrate the skin. Our unique spectrum filtering system eliminates hot spots. This allows the AFT treatment to produce a more powerful yet safe and effective treatment.

Who is a Candidate for AFT?

AFT is suitable for anyone who would like to enhance their skin appearances. Age spot removal, redness reduction, less visibility of acne, and scarring are just a few benefits of AFT. AFT works best for those with light to medium skin tones. Your provider will be able to assess how effective it is based on your individual skin tone. AFT effectively evens skin tone, minimizes fine lines, and reduces imperfections.

Is it Painful?

Most patients experience very little to no pain during treatment. The AFT handpiece has a built-in cooling technique that ensures safety and comfort during the procedure. Your provider will apply a topical numbing cream 10-15 minutes before your procedure to maximize comfort. Most patients compare the feeling of the laser to a very light snapping of a rubber band with a bit of heat, but still very tolerable. After your procedure, you might feel a very slight stinging sensation for up to two hours. The sensation feels like a mild sunburn but is still very tolerable.

How Long Does AFT Take?

AFT is considered to be a “lunch-time procedure” because it is quick and requires zero downtime. Depending on the size of the area being treated, the procedures take about 30 minutes to 1 hour. The entire face can be completed in just 20 minutes. The numbing process adds about 10-15 minutes to the procedure.

How Often Does IPL Need to be Performed?

Most patients will start to see changes in their skin after just one session of AFT. Depending on the severity of your skin irregularities, extra sessions may be necessary. Most patients need 4-5 sessions total for maximum results. A 3-4-week rest period between treatments is mandatory for skin safety and healing. 2-3 maintenance treatments are recommended per year for desired results.

we aren't really living.

How Long Do Results Last?

AFT does not prevent further age spots or future sun/skin damage. With proper skin routine and sun protection, we recommend only 2-3 sessions a year to maintain results.

What Areas of the Body can be Treated With AFT?

AFT can performed almost anywhere on the body, with the most common areas being the face, neck, chest, and hands.

What do I Need to do to Prepare for AFT treatment?

Two weeks before your AFT treatment, you will need to avoid sun exposure to the area being treated. If sun exposure is unavoidable, we recommend the use of SPF 30 or above. Remember to drink plenty of water to keep your skin well hydrated and to promote more rapid healing.

When Will I See a Results?

Many patients see results about one week after their first session, but maximum results usually take at least 3 sessions. With additional sessions, your skin will continue to appear newer, brighter, and younger until you’ve reached maximum results.

What is the Recovery From IPL Like?

Most patients can resume their daily activities immediately after their appointment. Typical side effects include mild stinging the first couple hours and redness the first or two days.
It is recommended to avoid direct sun exposure for the first 24 hours. Using SPF 30 or higher sunblock is mandatory since your skin will be sensitive after the treatment.
After a week, some of your spots will become darker, which is typical. These dark spots will eventually peel off, revealing a younger and healthier-looking skin underneath.

What Should I Expect at My Appointment?

Your provider will meet with you to assess your skin damage and skin type to determine proper laser settings. Your provider will apply a topical numbing agent 10-15 minutes prior to your treatment to ensure maximum comfort. A gel will be applied to your skin and the laser will be passed over the area until the entire area is treated. Your provider will clean the gel off of the area and provide you with any additional post-treatment instructions.
