What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a method of exfoliation that consists of using a 10-gauge scalpel to gently scrape off the top layer of dulling dead skin cells in order to reveal a smoother, brighter complexion. It is a favorite amongst celebrities in the entertainment industry because it not only removes any peach fuzz that is captured by sunlight and flash photography, but it also removes all dead skin cells and leaves the skin feeling smooth and looking bright.
Is it safe?
When it comes to Dermaplaning and the use of the very sharp blade used, there are zero safety concerns if the procedure is performed by a trained and licensed provider. Dermaplaning is no more dangerous than a man getting a facial shave from a barber shop as long as the provider is qualified. It often goes without saying, but when you undergo Dermaplaning it is important to sit very still since it is performed with a sharp blade.
How does it work?
Dermaplaning should be performed by a licensed and experienced provider because it involves running a very sharp blade- the type used in surgeries- over the skin to remove dead skin cells and fine facial hair (AKA peach fuzz) by scraping off the top layer of the skin. This procedure produces an immediately more radiant appearance. Following this treatment, makeup application is smoother and other skin products penetrate deeper making them more effective.
Who is a candidate for Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is an excellent choice for anyone who has fine facial hair, unusually sensitive skin, or rosacea. The only people who Dermaplaning is not recommended for are those with acne-prone skin. Oil from the sebaceous glands needs to travel along the villous hair to be excreted, and when the hair is removed, the oil builds up and blocks glands on the face which causes breakouts for people who are prone to them. In addition, anyone with numerous raised lesions or skin irregularities, or a nickel allergy, should not undergo Dermaplaning.
Is it painful?
No, Dermaplaning causes zero pain during or after the procedure and is compared to the feeling of shaving your legs. It is important to sit very still and make no sudden movements since there is a very sharp blade involved.
How long does Dermaplaning take?
Dermaplaning is a quick procedure and usually takes about 30 minutes to do the entire face. You can expect to be in and out of the office in less than an hour, including your consultation, preparation, treatment, and after care instructions.
How often does Dermaplaning need to be performed?
Dermaplaning can be performed approximately every 3-4 weeks or once the skin has completed its next rejuvenation cycle. In order for it to be effective and worthwhile, dead skin cells need to accumulate again, and the vellous hairs (peach fuzz) have to grow back. You can undergo a single Dermaplane treatment if you want radiant skin for a specific event, or you can do Dermaplane treatments once a month maintain radiant looking skin all the time.
How long do results last?
Results from Dermaplaning are temporary and last about 3-4, which is about how long it takes the skin to complete a rejuvenation cycle. It is not a permanent solution since dead skin cells continue to build over time, and fine hairs are constantly growing. Dermaplaning is a great treatment to do before an event or photoshoot, since the best results are most prominent immediately after the treatment.
What areas of the body can be treated with Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is designed to be facial treatment and is not normally used on any body parts besides the face and upper neck. If you have an inquiry about Dermaplaning for a body part other than your face, please ask one of our providers.
What do I need to do to prepare for a Dermaplaning treatment?
Nothing specific needs to be done in preparation for a Dermaplaning treatment, however, it is always recommended that patients avoid prolonged sun exposure and drink plenty of water before and after treatments. It is also not advised to undergo Dermaplane treatments if you have any raised lesions, open sores, or acne on your face.
What is the recovery from Dermaplaning like?
There is no recovery period after Dermaplaning. In fact, you can apply make-up and resume your normal daily activities directly after the treatment. We recommend using sun protection of SPF 30 or higher at all times to prevent hyperpigmentation. We also always recommend proper hydration to further promote healthy and glowing skin.
When will I see results?
Results from Dermaplaning are evident immediately after treatment. Your skin will feel softer than ever before to the touch, and it will appear more even in tone and texture. Most people notice that their makeup goes on more smoothly as well.
What should I expect at my appointment?
Dermaplane treatments usually take about 20-30 minutes. Your provider will cleanse your face, and a sterile blade will be used to gently exfoliate your skin. This treatment removes the thin, top layer of dead skin cells and fine hair (peach fuzz) through a gentle scraping process with a blade designed specifically for this process. This exfoliation process prevents dead skin buildup that can make small facial wrinkles and acne scars appear larger. Dead skin cells are what typically make your skin feel rough, and an effective Dermaplane treatment will eliminate these cells and leave your skin feeling smooth and looking radiant.
