What is Laser Tattoo Removal?
Laser tattoo removal is a laser treatment that removes or lightens unwanted tattoos.Laser therapy has become the “gold standard" because it is the most effective tattoo removal treatment. If laser tattoo removal is performed by a trained specialist, it will result in little to no side effects.
Is it safe?
Laser tattoo removal is the safest of any tattoo removal process because laser treatment selectively treats the pigment in the tattoo only. Risks include but are not limited to infection, scarring, and hypopigmentation.
How does it work?
Laser tattoo removal systems break up the tattoo’s pigment colors with a high-intensity light beam. These laser beams break up ink particles into tiny fragments, which are later cleared up by the body's scavenging cells. This process of fragmenting the ink particles requires numerous sessions depending on the depth of the ink level. The procedure is bloodless and no incisions are made. The laser selectively targets the pigment of the tattoo without damaging the surrounding skin.Black tattoo pigment absorbs all laser wavelengths, making it the easiest color to treat. Other colors can only be treated by selected lasers based upon the pigment color.
Who is a candidate for Laser Tattoo Removal?
Anyone who has an unwanted tattoo may be a candidate for laser tattoo removal. Your provider will evaluate your tattoo based on a number of different measures and advise you on the expected outcome based on the age of the tattoo, size of tattoo, colors in tattoo, how deep the tattoo pigment goes, and your skin tone. Laser tattoo removal works best on lighter skin tones who have tattoos in black ink only, but darker skin tones and colored tattoos can also be treated.
Is it painful?
Laser tattoo removal is known to be an uncomfortable procedure that compares to the pain of getting a tattoo. We apply topical numbing cream to ease any pain. In the case of a very large tattoo, local anesthesia may be administered to block the area from feeling pain. We also offer oral sedation for patients with a low pain tolerance or with a larger tattoo.
How long does Laser Tattoo Removal take?
The length of your treatment depends largely on the size of your tattoo. A very small tattoo might take 5 minutes, while a very large tattoo might take upwards of 30 minutes.
How often does it need to be performed?
Most people require between 3-10 sessions to see maximum results. These sessions are performed 4-8 weeks apart depending on how many sessions you’ve had. You are able to wait less time between sessions as your tattoo lightens. You might start sessions at 8 weeks apart and then be able to wait only 2-3 weeks in between sessions towards your final sessions.
How long do results last?
Results from laser tattoo removal are permanent. Once you have reached maximum results, you do not need to continue any type of laser tattoo removal to maintain your results. There are other treatment options for tattoo removal, such as dermabrasion, chemical peels, microneedling, and creams to assist in the process if indicated.
What areas of the body can be treated withLaser Tattoo Removal?
Laser tattoo removal can be performed almost anywhere on the body. Ask your provider if you are unsure if they are able to laser a tattoo somewhere on your body.

What should I expect at my appointment?
Your provider will discuss your tattoo and desired results versus expected results. You will have photographs taken (for office use only unless consent is given for additional mediums) so that the visibility of your tattoo can be compared over multiple sessions to assess effectiveness of treatments. Your provider will apply topical numbing cream to your tattoo that will be left on your skin for 10-15 minutes prior to starting the laser treatment. Your treatment length will vary based on the size of your tattoo. After your procedure, your tattooed area will be iced, antibiotic ointment will be applied, and a sterile dressing will be put on the area.
When will I see results?
For the first few days after a laser tattoo removal session, your skin will be heeling and may appear slightly red or blistered. After the initial healing period, you will be able to see a difference in the color of your tattoo, as it will appear lighter after each subsequent session.
