What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical, non-chemical, non-invasive method of skin resurfacing that utilizes fine crystals to provide effective exfoliation and rejuvenation of the superficial layers of the skin. When a more aggressive treatment is necessary, vacuum pressure can be increased to evenly penetrate deeper layers of the skin. Increasing the blood supply provides nutrients necessary for skin regeneration, repair, and increased cellular turnover. In return, improving the skins’ elasticity and texture, as well as balancing the pigment. Microdermabrasion also encourages the production of a new underlying layer of skin cells with higher levels of collagen and elastin, which further improves your skin’s appearance.
Is it safe?
Microdermabrasion is minimally invasive and extremely safe when performed by a qualified provider. It only treats the top layer of the skin, so recovery is very fast. Any complications from microdermabrasion (bruising, burning, or stinging) goes away quickly without additional treatment. Overall, microdermabrasion has an extremely high safety record.
How does it work?
Microdermabrasion is a non-chemical, non-invasive procedure that uses a spray of microcrystals to remove the outermost layer of dry, dead skin cells and reveal younger, healthier-looking skin. Your provider uses a minimally invasive handheld device that gently sands your skin and removes the thick uneven outer layer of your skin.
Who is a candidate for Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is suitable for any skin type and tone. Microdermabrasion is used to treat light scaring, discoloration, sun damage, and stretch marks. Additionally, microdermabrasion can help improve age spots, get rid of blackheads, improve hyperpigmentation, exfoliate your skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, reduced or eliminate enlarged pores, and treat acne and the scars left by acne.
Is it painful?
Microdermabrasion is not a painful procedure during or after the treatment. Although this is a cosmetic procedure, most patients also feel that it is quite relaxing. The only thing you may feel is a sanding sensation, and this is not painful. After the treatment, your skin can feel like you have a very slight sunburn, but this will subside within a day or 2.
How long does Microdermabrasion take?
Microdermabrasion is another “lunch-time procedure” since it can be performed in about 30 minutes for the entire face. Your provider will spend a few minutes assessing your skin and going over the procedure with you prior to the treatment, and then a few minutes after giving you any post-procedural instructions. Your provider will also wash and prep your skin before the procedure and moisturize your skin after your treatment.
How often does Microdermabrasion need to be performed?
Maximum results from microdermabrasion are usually reached in 5-8 sessions, which can be scheduled as closely as 1 week apart since the skin recovers so quickly from this treatment. Once you have achieved maximum results, you can have microdermabrasion treatments as a maintenance procedure, which your provider can recommend frequency for. Most patients schedule maintenance treatments approximately every 2-3 months.
How long do results last?
Results from microdermabrasion tend to be temporary. You can maintain results longer by taking care of your skin through a proper skin care routine, sun protection, and hydration. Even if you care for your skin properly, people will still age and develop new imperfections on their skin. Maintenance sessions are necessary to help maintain any results from microdermabrasion in order to keep your skin smooth and radiant looking.
What areas of the body can be treated with Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a facial/neck treatment in general, but it would be safe to use another area, such as the chest. Ask your provider if they would recommend microdermabrasion if you are looking to target another body part other than your face. There might be more suitable options available for skin that is not on your face/neck.
What do I need to do to prepare for Microdermabrasion treatment?
Prior to microdermabrasion, avoid any sun damage to your skin to allow for maximum comfort during your procedure. Let your provider know if you have any mole or other spots on your face that are growing, bleeding, or changing in any way. If you are taking medication for severe acne, you will need to wait for 6 months after ceasing taking that medication before you undergo a microdermabrasion treatment.
When will I see results?
Most patients need a series of treatments in order to see results. To treat signs of aging, a dermatologist may treat a patient with maintenance sessions weekly, every two weeks, or monthly. Most patients receive between 5 and 8 treatments before moving to a maintenance routine. After a series of treatments, patients usually say they have smoother skin and a more-radiant younger looking complexion.
What is the recovery from Microdermabrasion like?
After microdermabrasion, you may resume your normal daily activities. In some cases, your skin might be a bit red or swollen, but this is temporary and will subside generally within a few hours. You will need to apply moisturizer to your skin at the instruction of your provider. Patients heal very quickly from microdermabrasion the majority of the time and do not experience any pain during the recovery process.
What should I expect at my appointment?
Your provider will meet with you to discuss your skin irregularities and evaluate your skin. Prior to your treatment, your provider will wash your skin to remove excess oil and dirt. During the treatment, your provider will use a handheld device to gently remove your skin’s top layer. After your treatment, your provider will apply a moisturizer and give you any specific post-procedure instructions required.
